Architectural FirmWallace E. Cunningham | Designer
Wallace E. Cunningham

"I have attempted an organic architecture inspired by nature, one that is self-sustaining and unique, evolving from its site. It is intended to transcend the conventional definition of shelter and become something that shapes and enhances the human spirit. The process begins by seizing upon a single catalyst often related to the topography, climate or views specific to a site. The objective is to develop a complimentary relationship between these catalytic environmental forces and the architectural forms. If successful, the result is a building that is integrated into, and reacting to, the land. Any artificial definition between the interior and exterior spaces evaporates.

The physical architecture must temper the prevailing climatic conditions to establish its sustainability. However, the geometries used to channel natural ventilation or mediate solar exposures must also enhance the individual experience. The introduction of natural daylight throughout each project serves not only as the primary source of illumination, but also to define, fragment and animate space. Unexpected manipulations of form and light are intended to be as much sculptural as they are practical.

Nature is not static, nor should be the efforts of man. The natural elements that affect a site are continually evolving, expanding and diminishing, as they interact with one another. When architecture defines the built form as a nonmalleable solid, the result is a design devoid of any spirit. Open up a structure to sky, landscape, and view and the building becomes alive; create unconfined space and your soul has a place to soar."

Wallace E. Cunningham's work was recognized by the International Academy of Architecture in 2003, and he was named one of the Top 100 Designers by Architectural Digest in 2004 and 2007. Visit www.wallacecunningham.com

"We consider landscape and architecture as two modes of the same visual and spatial continuum. The visual design may evolve from a project’s cultural and physical environment and be informed by geography, ecology and history; spatial organization is emphasized by the movement of people through a place, how a series of spaces is connected, how objects and materials frame and form the proportions."

Pamela Burton & Company is an internationally renowned landscape architecture firm that specializes in integrating the disciplines of art, architecture and landscape to extend conventional notions of landscape architecture and functionality, beauty, and metaphorical resonance to the environment. Established in 1975, the Santa Monica-based corporation employs 12 professional landscape architects and designers to offer comprehensive landscape, urban design, and master planning services to civic, institutional, commercial, and residential clients. The company’s wide variety of clients and sites results in a new approach to each project that balances the continuum with each client’s desires.

Technical expertise and aesthetic sensitivity are complemented by an interest in the symbolic
nature of the built environment and a commitment to create a sustainable landscape design
that fulfills the needs of clients. Pamela Burton & Company has worked within many (LEED™) certified projects and is committed to the ongoing efforts in conservation and preservation.

The company is certified as a City of Los Angeles DBE/WBE (Disadvantaged/Women Business Enterprise) by the California Unified Certifications Program (CUCP), and recognized by all U.S. DOT recipients in California. Visit www.pamelaburtonco.com
